History

A legend isn’t created overnight, it takes years. For over 40 years we’ve been perfecting the art of baking gourmet pies and premium desserts for our customers and guests. The legend began in 1969 in a single restaurant called Mrs. C’s in Des Moines, Iowa. Mrs. C’s served homemade fare of soups, cold sandwiches and fresh baked pie... cream pies and double-crust fruit pies so good they quickly earned a reputation comparable to the pies grandma made.

Word got around and Pillsbury took notice of the pies’ reputation. Soon after, the company purchased Mrs. C’s and named it Poppin’ Fresh Pies. More eateries were opened and before long, demand for the pies outgrew the restaurants’ abilities to bake them. As a result, Pillsbury began making pies at centralized bakeries to assure fresh pies were always available.

In 1983, VICORP Restaurants, Inc. (now American Blue Ribbon Holdings, LLC) of Denver, CO, the owner and franchisor of Village Inn Restaurants, purchased Poppin’ Fresh Pies and their bakeries and changed the name to Bakers Square. Back then, Legendary Baking was known as VICOM and produced pies for both Bakers Square and Village Inn. Over the years, the legacy of premium pies endured and VICOM began producing pies for customers beyond the two restaurants.

Today, Legendary Baking™ is the award-winning bakery division of American Blue Ribbon Holdings, LLC. Based in Denver, Colorado, the company is a leading provider of premium pies and baked desserts for restaurants and grocery retailers across the U.S. Legendary Baking’s product lines include gourmet, double-crust fruit pies, layered cream pies, meringues, oven pies and a full assortment of premium baked desserts. Since 2001, the company has won 297 Blue Ribbons at the APC National Pie Championships.
